Cisco-Linksys WRT54GX Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX Best

Cisco-Linksys WRT54GX Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX Feature

  • Internet-sharing Router, 4-port Switch, with a built in speed and range enhanced Wireless-G (802.11g) Access Point
  • Shares a single Internet connection and other resources with Ethernet wired, Wireless-G, -B, and other SRX devices
  • New SRX technology: the farther away, the more advantage -- up to 8 times faster than standard Wireless-G (802.11g)
  • SRX also increases wireless range by up to 3 times and reduces dead spots in coverage area
  • Requires OS that supports Ethernet and TCP/IP, fully compatible with Windows 2000 and Windows XP, partially compatible with Windows 98, Me, Linux

Cisco-Linksys WRT54GX Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX Overview

Internet-sharing Wireless-G Router with SRX technology provides up to 8 times faster wireless network throughput, reduces dead spots, and increases wireless range by up to 3 times. The Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect Wireless-G, Wireless-B, and other performance-enhanced SRX devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. It combines smart antenna technology with standards-based Wireless-G (802.11g) networking. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. The signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections up to 3 times farther than standard Wireless-G. The farther away you are, the better -- the higher data rate and reflection-friendly technology can yield up to 8 times more throughput than Wireless-G in some situations. The router avoids interference by dynamically switching to the clearest channel available. Even your standard Wireless-G and -B equipment will work better when communicating with SRX-enabled devices. The Router can encode all wireless transmissions with industrial-strength WPA encryption. It can serve as your network's DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. Finally you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multi-player games with flexibility, speed, and security! Also works with WPC54GX - Connects your notebook to the Wireless-G network with SRX technology.

Cisco-Linksys WRT54GX Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX Specifications

Amazon.com Product Description Now you can enjoy wireless home-network access in those hard-to-reach rooms and--simultaneously--get faster networking and Internet performance, too. The WRT54GX Wireless-G broadband router from Linksys uses the company's advanced SRX (Speed and Range eXpansion) technology to enhance the speed and the reach of a Wireless-G (802.11g) network. The WRT54GX can provide faster wireless network throughput, reduce dead spots, and increase wireless range over standard Wireless-G networks.

The handy WRT54GX serves as an Internet-sharing router, a four-port 10/100 switch, and an SRX-enhanced Wireless-G access point all at once. Relative to standard 80 2.11g technology, a network using all SRX products can extend network reach up to three times as far and boost wireless network speed by up to eight times. (Actual throughput, speed, and range depend on a host of factors, from building materials to network traffic and distance from the router.)

The device is Wi-Fi-certified and backward compatible with 802.11b (Wireless-B), 802.11g (Wireless-G) and, of course, other Linksys SRX products. Mixed wireless environments such as networks containing SRX, Wireless-B, and Wireless-G products can operate each client at its own maximum data rate. SRX products maintain their higher speed and range, providing the throughput and quality of service to deliver applications such as VoIP (Internet telephony) and video streaming.

SRX is based on MIMO (multiple-in, multiple-out) technology, a key component in the upcoming Wireless-N (802.11n) standard. To improve range and speed, MIMO uses two radios and three antennas on a wireless router or client adapter.

To enhance data protection and privacy, the router can encode all wireless trans missions with WPA (Wireless Protection Access). Its powerful Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall enhances protection to all the wired and wireless PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks while also supporting VPN passthrough. Configuration is easy using a Web-browser-based configuration utility.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

  • 802.11b
  • 802.11a
  • 802.11g

Cisco-Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander - REFURBISHED Overview

Expand the range of your wireless home network. The Wireless-G Range Expander is the easy way to increase the effective coverage of your wireless network. Unlike adding a traditional access point to your network to expand wireless coverage, the Wireless-G Range Expander does not need to be connected to the network by a data cable. Just put it within range of your main access point or wireless router. It is designed to "bounce" signals into those distant, reflective corners and hard-to-reach areas where wireless coverage is spotty and cabling is impractical. This "relay station" or "repeater" approach helps to build a wireless infrastructure and save wiring costs. Installation is a snap with the Auto Configuration button. Just plug it in and press the button. The Expander is designed to find your wireless network and configure itself automatically.

Setup Internet connection to Digital Video Recorder Behind Router

This is first narrative from two part series finding at the seemingly easy task of setting up Internet connection to protection Dvr. While this narrative will focus on general steps involved in proper connection forwarding to Cctv Dvr, the part two is all about dynamic Dns retain and workarounds. Before we step into the main subject, I like to elucidate very briefly a few key aspects of Internet connection for those of us not customary with term like Ip address, Ddns, port forwarding or Ip mapping.

Terminology:

Linksys Wrt54g Setup

Every computer or other network device, in our case Cctv recorder has its own address called Ip address, much like your home address it allows the facts to find its way in mountainous world of internet. Ip address has four groups of numbers separated by dots; the number range is between 0 and 255. There are two isolate networks that we need to take into consideration, Lan for Local Area Network and Wan for Wide Area Network. Lan has its own Ip addresses and handles connection on local network devices (computers or devices placed in your home or office network), if Wan Ip is your home address than Lan Ip would be your apartment number.

Wan Ip is an external address visible to every user on the Internet. We will elucidate rest of the terminology as we go along.

Setup:

The best way to elucidate and elucidate guard Dvr connection setup is to use an example. In our example, we will setup Dvr model Vdv-074 from Dvrexperts through Netopia Router/Modem combo currently used by At&T Dsl supplier with static Ip service, I will also use Linksys Wrt54G Router for Cable Dsl connection. protection Dvr recorder needs to be related to the Internet through Router and Modem, in some cases Router and Modem are all in one devices, for example Netopia Routers.

For standalone Modems please associate the Internet out to Wan port, on your Router. associate Cctv Dvr and computers to available ports on the Router as well. Your Router will need to be setup now to log in to the Internet assistance supplier and fabricate connection.

Netopia Router users:

Open up browser on your computer and type into the address bar your routers default Ip http://

192.168.1.254. User name and password window should appear; the default user name and password for Netopia Routers are admin for user and serial number of your Router for the password.

Select Configure followed by Quick start link, type your Internet assistance providers user name (email address) and your Isp password. Click submit and alert icon placed in upper right projection (I know it is strange), finally make your mind up save and restart. Your connection should be up in small or so, click home link to see your connection status.

Linksys Router users:

Open up browser on your computer and type into the address bar your routers default Ip [http://192.168.1.1]. User name and password window should appear; the default user name and password for Linksys routers are admin for user and admin for the password.

The home page of the router has Isp settings, type in your email address as a user name and Isp password for the password, make your mind up save or submit. The Router will restart after small or so, log in again and go to status page to see if your connection status is Up.

If everything is ok and your connection is Up, we can now trek, to fun part of the setup process

There is great number of separate protection Digital Video Recorders on the market, so please ensue your Dvr's manual for details; I will only furnish the proper settings. In the Dvr menu, setup static Lan (Internal) Ip for the Dvr, in our example we have 3 computers and Dvr. Each gismo has assigned Lan Ip address as follows:

Computer 1 - 192.168.1.100

Computer 2 - 192.168.1.101

Computer 3 - 192.168.1.102

Dvr - 192.168.1.103

The guard Dvr will now be accessible within our network by typing its assigned internal Ip (192.168.1.103) into browser or connection software. What we need now is to transmit the connection from external Ip (Wan) which is accessible from surface of our network to the Lan Ip of the Dvr (192.168.1.103).

Netopia Router users:

Select Configure followed by advanced and finally Ip Maps. Ip map table should be empty, click on add and type into Ip Map Entry Name text box the name of your Dvr connection, in our example I just typed in Dvr so I know what this Ip map is for. In Internal Ip address box type in 192.168.1.103, for external Ip address refer to you Isp work sheet and find out what is your Ip. In some cases Isp will furnish more than one static Ip, you can select one of them.

Click submit and alert icon placed in upper right corner, finally make your mind up save and restart.

From now on anyone requesting external Ip will be forwarded to the internal Ip of the Dvr (192.168.1.103), therefore the connection should be established successfully.

Linksys Router users:

When setting up your Dvr for passage from the Internet, you will need to configure Port Forwarding on your Linksys Router. This can be done in one of two ways, definite Port Forwarding or the Dmz host. The Dmz host automatically forwards all incoming connection requests to a given Ip address on your local network. Open the Applications & Gaming section of the router and select Dmz. Dmz is not gather and should only be used with embedded, non-Pc based Cctv recorders.

To expose the Dvr to the Internet, enter the Dvr local Ip address (192.168.1.103) in the Dmz Host Ip address box. In some cases you may just want to transmit definite ports to your protection Dvr. If you are running any other device/server that hosts services available to the internet, you will want to use definite port forwarding instead of the Dmz Host, also if your Dvr is Pc based it is strongly recommended for protection reasons, to only transmit ports used by Dvr connection. Open the applications & Gaming section of the router and select Port Range Forwarding. Type in the name for the connection, starting port number, ending port number and internal Ip of the Dvr (192.168.1.103 in our example). Save and exit.

Your connection is now setup properly.

You probably noticed the term static Ip in this article, and are wondering what that is.

Well, static Ip is what the name suggests an Ip that never changes. While there is no qoute with internal Ip selection; we can use anyone we want or prefer - the external Ip, usually is dynamic. The static Ip has to be requested from the Isp and is more expensive than dynamic Ip. In our case we do want static Ip so we have address for Cctv Dvr connection that will never change.

Throughout this tutorial I have assumed that the external static Ip is available.

Unfortunately in many areas it is not, or the cost is prohibitive. Don't panic yet, there is at least consolidate of separate ways around this qoute and I will try to go over each arrival in my next narrative "How to use free dynamic Dns services for Dvr connection."

{Found} i Hate Routers (The search for the 'perfect' Wireless N router). Found one.

Found i Hate Routers (The search for the 'perfect' Wireless N router). Found one. Video Clips. Duration : 4.13 Mins.

I've found a router so everything you read below is past past past. I got to get a better router for gaming at the moment this old WRT54G v8 ain't gonna to do it. I've been looking at the NETGEAR WNDR3700 (8 internal antenna), Linksys E3000 (only 6 antenna) and any other Top of the line/Gaming router. Comment on other choices. Comment below on your router and let me know how it worked out. How often did you reset your router and modem? No more lag? LET THE COMMENTS COMMENCE!!!, and be nice. LOL FAIL (you'll see). Also this was taken with the built in web cam on DiViUs (HP Dv6 1030us). It's format type is bad for video editing. 10.10 beta on the laptop and the wireless works with the old D-Link THANK GOD. Although the DLink stopped working (over heated). Found out that the wndf 3700 can't share a printer over the network LOL WHAT!? FAIL. The WNDR37AV can support printer wirelessly. Can't do any Dlink routers because they have issue with Linux for some reason. Belkin routers don't get along with Wiis however the Belkin n1 vision still interest me.

How to Use Free Dynamic Dns Services For Dvr association

In my last description "Setup Internet association To Digital Video Recorder Behind Router" we have talked about Internet association setup to safety Dvr, based on static Ip. I assume that anyone reading this description is not that much fortunate, and could not get static Ip association from Internet assistance provider (Don't worry, you are not alone). Ip numbers just like a phone numbers are being rapidly depleted and some Isp have taken appropriate actions to insure that pool of Ip addresses will be available for extended future. It is the main reason, why some associates decided to allocate static addresses to market accounts only. In some cases the only available high-speed provider is the Cable Company. Cable Dsl does not offer static Ip at all but it has higher speeds.

So, what do we do?

Linksys Wrt54g Setup

There are any dissimilar options, but in this tutorial I will focus on the free alternatives. Before I go into the details, lets look at Dns term. Dns is Short for Domain Name principles or Server; it takes Ip address as input and tries to mach it to known domain name. In our case we are going to use dynamic domain name services to modernize our Ip address as it changes and assign that Ip to given domain name. Than we use that domain name to way our safety Dvr.

Option 1:

For stand-alone safety Dvr the recommended alternative is to use Linksys Wrt54G Router, which has Ddns support. First go to and setup free account, with the account info available, login to the Router and go to Ddns page. opt dyndns.com for the assistance provider and type in account password. After recovery the Router will send Ip updates to your dyndns.com account and despite your dynamic Ip the association will always be forwarded to you current Ip.

Option 2:

For Pc based surveillance Dvrs, if Dvr doesn't have its own Ddns support, please go to the same assistance provider at and again account has to be setup, but in this case instead of using Router for updating we will download updater software. The updater software is more reliable than Router updater, but it needs computer running at all times. That is why updater software is more practical in Pc based Dvr, as it will run non-stop. Both options are wholly free and will allow us to be able to way surveillance Dvr with dynamic Ip.

Good Luck!

How to Make a WiFi Hotspot Router From a Linksys Wrt54Gl

OpenWrt and X-Wrt
OpenWrt is a Open Source firmware project for the Wrt54Gl router. It's a very small version of Linux which runs in place of the stock Linksys firmware. The firmware is available from openwrt.org. I prefer to use someone else project called X-wrt (x-wrt.org) which is based on OpenWrt but has added a nice graphical front end for configuring the router.

To setup X-Wrt (Which may void your warranty)

Linksys Wrt54g Setup

1) Download the openwrt-wrt54g-squashfs.bin firmware image to your Pc
2) Open [http://192.168.1.1/Upgrade.asp] in your browser or manually go to
[http://192.168.1.1] -> administration -> Firmware Upgrade
3) Upload openwrt-wrt54g-2.4-squashfs.bin
4) Wait 2 minutes. The router will reboot itself automatically after the upgrade is complete.
5) You should now be able to telnet to your router (Ip address: 192.168.1.1) and start configuring.

Installing a Captive-Portal.
Nearly all market Hotspots are Captive Portals, this appears as an Open or Unencrypted Wifi signal but then redirects any traffic to a definite web page called a "Splash Page" where your often asked to login or purchase internet access. This is a clever way of doing things as most laptops will automatically connect to an open WiFi signal, then when a buyer runs Internet Explorer (or which ever Web browser they use) they are sent to your splash page no matter what site they try to connect to. The most well known free captive portal software is Chillispot, which can be downloaded, and set-up, alternatively a estimate of market providers yield easy to use Captive Portal software, which can be installed on your Wrt54Gl.

Summary

In this article we have look at how superior and versatile the Linksys Wrt54Gl router is. With a bit of work you can change it into a superior WiFi Hotspot router, which can be used for billing your customers for Internet access. Good luck with you new project!
